PET bottles are not all made from the same resin. PET, PETG, and RPET behave differently in production, look different on the shelf, and suit different products. Here is how they compare.
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
PET is the default choice for standard bottled water, carbonated drinks, edible oil, and food containers. It is clear, lightweight, and provides a decent barrier against moisture and gases. It is also the most cost-effective resin for high-volume runs and carries Recycling Code 1.
On the downside, PET is not suitable for high-temperature filling. Standard PET bottles are single-use. UV-sensitive products may need additives or colored PET to protect the contents.
PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol)
PETG is used for cosmetic bottles, pharmaceutical packaging, and any product that needs high clarity or impact resistance. It resists impact better than standard PET, has excellent clarity and gloss, and is easier to thermoform. It also stays amorphous, which allows thicker walls without crystallization.
The trade-offs: PETG costs more than PET. Its CO2 barrier is weaker, so it is less suitable for carbonated drinks. Processing temperatures differ from PET, so molds may need temperature adjustments.
RPET (Recycled PET)
RPET suits brands with sustainability commitments, retail chains that require recycled content, and producers who want to reduce virgin plastic use. It is made from post-consumer recycled PET bottles and can be blended with virgin PET in different ratios to hit your target performance.
Recycled content means color may vary slightly from batch to batch. You need to source carefully to ensure food-grade compliance. Some markets require specific recycled-content certifications.

Mold Compatibility
